I don't know how that happened, other than, well, one gets busy and time goes by before you know it.

So, what have I been working on?

The biggest project is that I wrote a new set of rules and released them - Battle Command Musket to Rifle (1700-1900). These were released in January 2023 and are available through the Piquet wargames website: https://www.piquetwargames.com/product-page/battle-command-musket-to-rifle-1700-1900

I'll go into a lot more detail about these rules in future posts, but here is the summary:

Battle Command Musket to Rifle 1700-1900 introduces many more command decisions, while maintaining the fog of war through the use of a deck of sequence cards. The Action Matrix allows players to seize opportunities to emphasize specific actions, sometimes having to make a very hard decision on whether to use the card for only one Command group or to instead use the card for a much larger portion of the army. This allows players to get inside the command loop of the enemy and by the choices made, make the enemy face tough decisions of their own.

Armies with a better CiC will have opportunities for more flexibility and better choices than armies with lower rated CiCs. Battle Command is a fast, fun game that emphasizes command and fog of war more than any other game in the Field of Battle/Piquet stable of games. The decisions can be hard, but the rules are not.
<p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; They'll be an expanded and modified version of Pulse of Battle, covering the ancient period up through the Swiss Burgundian war in the late 1400s.

The games we played were both Republican Romans vs. a Gaul army. There's not a lot of nuance in playing a Gaul army, and not much tactical flexibility. The Roman army is the complete opposite. I didn't expect the Gauls to win (I used the same troop count for both sides in the first game) as I was primarily doing rule testing. The Gauls didn't disappoint. They were CRUSHED in the first game. The Romans blew a wide hole in the middle of the Gaul army, decimating the Gaul's Army Morale Point total, and the Gauls happily failed their first Army Morale test.

The second game had the Gauls with about a 40% advantage in army size......and they still lost. The Romans concentrated on the Gaul right flank, and the Gaul left flank couldn't get enough movement to ever get into the game. The Gaul cavalry on the right had an opportunity to sweep around the Roman left/rear, but couldn't seem to get going.

Photos follow below.

<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PQCUdAR21zY/YVnd_TxGOMI/AAAAAAAACBk/Ujtvr_V-q78oeiGCHosuNr4zS5l8IOqTACLcBGAsYHQ/IMG_1484.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; The start of the game was delayed a bit because everyone was so glad to see each other, and the stories were flying!

We played two SYW games, with the first armies that I finished during the pandemic - Austrians and Prussians. This was their first time in battle. Both games were close - the Austrians won the first game by a slim margin. The commanders switched sides, and the Prussians won the second game by the tiniest margin.

During the second game, both sides were at 0 AMPs. The Prussians decided to take a couple of low percentage artillery shots just to see if they could get an AMP paid to them by the Austrians for a UI loss, which would put them at least out of the danger zone with 0 AMPs. Rolling a D4 vs. a D6, Greg R. rolled a 4 vs. a 1! 1 UI lost to the Austrians, and the morale point went to the Prussians. Now a second fire, at a D4 vs. a D6, and Greg R. once again rolled a 4 vs. a 1!! That's a 1 in 576 chance of occurring!!! The next Prussian card was turned.....and it was the Army Morale card! Without the drama of the artillery fire successes, the Prussians would have been forced to check morale to see if they remained in the battle. Whew.

Two more times both sides were at 0 AMPs, but eventually the Prussians crept up a couple of AMPs and finally the Austrians turned an Army Morale card when they had 0 AMPs.....and they failed. What a game!

This was the first time using a couple of my new Cigar Box Battle mats. They are awesome! I just used them over my terrain squares terrain, and I loved the smooth hill shapes.

I'll finish this post with a random assortment of some game photos.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It has only been 5 months since the last post....

We (Piquet Inc.) are just about ready to release Eric Burgess' fantastic set of siege rules, titled "Vauban's Wars". You can read more about VW on Eric's blog: https://dinofbattle.blogspot.com/

There is also a set of casino quality cards that go with the game.

Both are available for pre-order here: https://www.piquetwargames.com/physical-historical-supplements

This set will become the standard by which all other siege games are measured. Eric has done a fantastic job with the rules.

The other "new" set is Field of Battle, 3rd Edition. Conveniently enough, the rulebook, sequence cards, and campaign tactical map cards are also available at: https://www.piquetwargames.com/physical-historical-supplements

On new game development news, I'm working away on the WW2 tactical set - titled "Nothing Less Than Victory". In this game, the basic unit of combat is a single stand squad (for infantry), a single stand weapon section (representing 2-3 weapons) and a single stand tank or vehicle (representing 2-3 vehicles). It's pretty easy to get a full battalion on the table, and the game plays quickly. My expectations are to have NLTV complete and published by early spring 2021.

I've also been doodling ideas for a couple of other games - a WW2 air game that is semi operational, yet also features rapid resolution of missions, allowing for encounters and dogfights. I'm working on my 1/285th plane collection for this game, but have a ways to go before it gets more fleshed out.

I'm also jotting down ideas and procedures for a high level WW2 game where the basic unit for combat is the battalion. In effect a player would be commanding around a division in the game, but there's no reason he couldn't command more. I think it would be ideal for the Western Desert or Russian campaigns.

And in the midst of all this "work" (its not work - its PLAY), I'm making great progress on my current miniatures painting progress - large ACW cavalry forces. I'm making 12 mounted and dismounted cavalry units for each side. The Confederate mounted forces are done and the Federal mounted forces are 2/3 done. The dismounted units should paint much quicker. I've always been fascinated by cavalry in the ACW and how it developed and was used. Tons of interesting scenarios!

I'll start posting photos of my "pandemic" collections. I finished (although nothing is ever finished) my SYW armies, rebased all of my ancient armies, mounted up armies for the WW2 battalion game, and did some more painting for my 25mm WW2 forces. Pics to follow.....
Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-27890675368634086032020-04-24T08:51:00.001-06:002020-04-24T08:51:36.471-06:00Field of Battle 3rd Edition Now Available!Field of Battle, 3rd Edition is now available for sale via the piquetwargames.com website.
This project has taken a long time - I think I probably started working on this 7-8 years ago. A lot of work, but very enjoyable to go through the development and testing!

Lots of things happening. Real life and hobby wise - both!

Oh yeah, and the Broncos managed to suck again. Luckily the coaching void that was Vance Joseph has been sent packing and that provides at least a glimmer of hope for Bronco fans worldwide.

Just a glimmer.

On the gaming front, I've been working on Field of Battle 3rd Edition, and doing a ton of work on Season of Battle, the campaign system to be included in FoB3. I'm finally very happy with where SoB is, and it is mainly just some clean up in the rules for it to be "done".

We played two FPW games yesterday, with two run throughs of SoB to set the campaign situation for the second game and then the upcoming (date TBD) 3rd game in the campaign.

Yesterday was a bad day for the Prussians. A crushing loss in Game 1, followed by a moderate loss in Game 2. After all the campaign maneuvering played out, the French find themselves in the home area of the Prussians, in the Fall, with a very real chance of ending the campaign before winter hits.

As I didn't take enough photos for a play by play report of the game, I'll just post some representative photos.
Here's the battlefield:

Prussians deployed to the left side of the table, French to the right.
The first game featured a French massed attack from the hill area, with virtually all of their army deployed in 1/4 of the table, focused on a left hook to crush the Prussians and attack through the town.

In reality, it almost worked out that way entirely. The French had effectively achieved overwhelming numerical superiority at the point of decision (French right flank at the river), and won the game going away.

For game 2, we kept the terrain and the armies, but switched players. This was quite a dramatic game, with the Prussians rushing the French on the heights at the start of the game. They bled the French white, but the French still had some chips remaining. All of this before the French had their first move card! But then, the French started to get their own move cards - coupled with a staggering number of triple moves (won even!), resulted in the Prussians being caught a bit overextended on the hill by a now deployed Grand Battery. On the French right, their 6 cavalry regiments swept across the field (go Rodney go!) towards the Prussian flank force commanded by John. After some losses, John managed to get his two flank infantry battalions into square, which effectively slowed the cavalry assault as they were reluctant to try the squares. Finally, an out of command square was ridden over and the cavalry were flowing into the back of the Prussian army when......the French ran out of AMP's, and started giving them to the Prussians. Right before the French ran out of AMPs, they had 2 points remaining to the Prussian 5. The contest continued back and forth with the French passing one Army Morale check before finally losing on a failed Army Morale check. Quite a game!
You can find it at https://www.facebook.com/groups/201897673911387/ . The page has only been up for a week or so. To date, the content is somewhat limited, but I expect that to change as more members join up and we get into a rhythm of adding material.

So come on over and join us on the Piquet/Field of Battle Facebook page!

What's next? Videos? Podcast? Both? Neither? Who knows? Certainly not me.....Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-50835628450238290312018-03-11T18:14:00.002-06:002018-03-11T18:14:23.285-06:00I'm Back!!!!I see that the last post was in October. Hmmmm. A lot has happened since then. Let's see:

1) The Broncos didn't win the Super Bowl.
2) The Broncos didn't make the playoffs.
3) The Broncos finished with the 5th worst record in the NFL.
4) The Broncos trotted out a trio of quite possibly the worst accumulation of QB's in the history of the league.
5) Played a few games that didn't make it onto the blog - ACW, Napoleonics, FPW, APW, Punic War. I'll post a few random photos after the text of this blog post. I honestly have no recollection of who won, who lost. All I remember was that the games were fun!
6) Started the final stage of our house renovation - finishing the floor for the basement. It took us months to finally decide what type of floor we wanted, as well as the color/style. We finally settled on Cortec HD, a luxury vinyl plank product. Waterproof, has some insulation value, and it is beautiful. We finished the flooring install last weekend, and this weekend we finished all the trim work. IT IS DONE! A 4 year project, renovating our home from top to bottom. New bathrooms. New kitchen. Relocated windows. Hardwood throughout the house. New spindles and handrails. New lights. It is hard for me to believe that it is actually complete. No more planning and establishing project plans for timing, arrival of material, etc. DONE.

On to other news - today I established a Facebook page for Piquet/Field of Battle, rather imaginatively titled Piquet and Face of Battle. If you're interested, look it up on Facebook and join. We're glad to have you! https://www.facebook.com/groups/201897673911387/
Playtest - 3 Months Ago....As I've prepared our next games for tomorrow - ECW, using the not yet released mini-supplement for FoB2, "Give Fire!", I thought I should post some photos from the previous game.

Based on previous test games, I'd made some minor changes (salvo fire, commanded shot, some minor modifiers). I also rebased all of the pike and command figures, so now all foot units have 3 stands. I really really really like the look of foot units with 3 stands. They just look more "clumpy" and less linear. Anyway, now for the photos of our somewhat game of 2nd Newbury:
I'm just slow to report! I actually don't remember much about the game in detail, but the Austrians did lose, again. At least they were consistent throughout the campaign!

Some photos of the final game follow.
We started an 1809 campaign as additional playtesting/development of the upcoming campaign system for Field of Battle, titled "Season of Battles". The game, for some reason, seemed disjointed - maybe the players were out of practice as it has been a while since the last Napoleonic game of FoB. The French were commanded by the dashing team of John, Chris, Greg R., and Rodney, while the Austrians were led by the soon to be defeated team of Eric, Greg C., and Terry. The Austrians had some set up and location advantages, but the French had a pretty significant strength advantage (+30%). Ultimately, the Austrians put up a valiant defense but ended up on the end of a crushing defeat. It will be a steep climb for the Austrians to get out of the hole created by such a big loss in the opening battle of the campaign, but we shall see! The set up and post game campaign process helped me a great deal as SoB moves ever closer to completion.
I look at this as confirmation that the days of printed wargame magazines is past. Miniature Wargames used to be good. Now.......

Contents consist of 78 pages or so:

Page 1: The obligatory self serving editorial that nobody reads.
Pages 2-9: Historical product reviews. Better done online and also more timely online.
Pages 10-13: Regular column "Send Three and Fourpence". I have to admit, this column holds little interest for me.
Page 14. Advertisement
Page 15-20: Roman political game
Page 21: Advertisement
Page 22-25: Show review
Page 26-33: Indian Mutiny rules. Apparently the author believes all the ground in India is milk chocolate colored.
Page 34: Ad
Page 35 - 49 Sci-fi and Fantasy section
Page 50-53 Show review
Page 54-55 Using cards in games
Page 56-57 Show review
Pages58-63 Product reviews
Page 64-67 Modelling a stockade. Crudely done - much better terrain instruction online available elsewhere.
Pages 68-73: Yet another show review
Pages 74-76: Club directory
Pages 77-78: Ads

Literally NOTHING of interest, with bad content. Why do I buy this? The new editor clearly has a passion for Sci-fi and fantasy. The "historical" section has been reduced to mainly show reviews and product reviews.

All in all, a garbage product. Save your money and buy a book or two.Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-85800337568061072042017-01-10T20:23:00.001-07:002017-01-10T20:23:55.304-07:00First Games of 2017I'll try to be more regular with my posting schedule in 2017. No, really. I'll try.

We played 2 games this past Saturday - Give Fire! (ECW Field of Battle) and Nothing Less Than Victory (a soon to be published WW2 game).

To be honest, I don't really remember which side won either of the games, as I treated them as development games. Both were a lot of fun, however. We started the ECW game at around noon, and were finished before 2:30. The WW2 game started at around 4:15, and was done at 6:30 PM.

A few photos from the WW2 game follow below. The notable feature was the presence of the Tiger II. Unknown to the US players was the fact that the Tiger II had broken down and was immobile. On top of that, it only had 4 rounds of fire available. The Tiger made those 4 rounds count, taking out all 3 Shermans and a halftrack with an infantry squad. BOOM!

The first quarter of the year was spent finishing up our 2 year renovation of our house. As we completed that project, my wife Lisa's knee kept getting worse and worse.

Which leads me to the main item from 2016 - Lisa's total knee replacement surgery in May. We thought we were prepared, but I don't know that anything could have prepared us for the pain after the surgery and the seemingly endless rehab and strengthening. Keep in mind, we're both very healthy and fit, working out regularly, so she had great muscle mass to help out to begin with. However, it was still very difficult for her. Eventually, after having a manipulation to break loose scar tissue that had formed (how that formed, given the near constant rehab work, is beyond me!), and moving from rehab to strength regaining exercises, she's pretty much pain free. Now its just stiffness at times, and tightness that we've been told "should" pretty much be gone in another 6 months or so. I'm very proud of her for all her determination through the process. It would have been far easier to just quit and live with limitations, but she was driven to get back as much as possible so that she could ride her motorcycle! We finally got in a couple of rides in October and November, which really helped her morale as she was thrilled to know that she could ride again.

So that brings us to November and December. I was able to put on 2 game days, with another one planned for the first weekend in the upcoming January. I was able to put on the first game with my ECW collection, which was really fun - considering I started the painting years....and years....ago.

On the rules front, I have "Nothing Less Than Victory" (WW2) nearly done, with 90% of the FoB campaign system developed. I have "Rusty Buckets" developed in my mind, as well as thoughts for air games, finishing up "Give Fire!", and other projects. While rule writing is a big task, I just can't seem to stop wanting to do more games. Its a sickness....

I've been able to get back to painting, finishing up some units for my ECW stuff around Thanksgiving, and now turning to the beginnings of my Wars of the Roses collection.

And of course, there's always the Denver Broncos. It has been a struggle this season, as injuries and a new QB have provided more challenges than had been anticipated. Technically, they're still in the hunt for a playoff position, but it really doesn't mean much as this year's team won't be in the playoffs for long even if they make it. The silver lining is that the probable 3rd place finish in the division means a much easier schedule next year, as well as better draft choices. Seasons like this really make one appreciate Super Bowl seasons!

I wish all of you well, and a safe and fun holiday season!Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-39557187582304918662016-12-09T20:01:00.001-07:002016-12-09T20:01:13.367-07:00Review: Miniature Wargames #404, Wargames Illustrated #350I've been a subscriber of WI and MW for as long as they've existed. I just discovered that I forgot to take any photos of the WSS game, which is a shame - it was a beautiful game with wonderful figures from the collection of Eric Miller and Greg Cornell. Loads of Brits, French, Spanish, Danes, and maybe some others I'm forgetting. I believe that Greg and Eric have photos. I'll either post a link to a blog with those, or if I get any photos, I'll post a new post with WSS photos.

The ECW game featured two small to moderate sized armies - 8 units of foot, 4 units of horse, and 1 artillery unit each.

The game played well, with the Royalists winning a close fought battle. I've made some tweaks to the rules to reflect the period tactics and limitations, and made some more adjustments based on the game play. It was great to see the ECW armies on the table for the first time!
My table has a table top a bit over 5' x 9'. The new table features shaker doors and knobs to match the other new cabinets, as well as eliminating the old caster wheels and replacing them with a sturdy base/toekick. While I was at it, I also redid the top surface to have it more useful for naval games.
The top was done by stippling a mix of medium and lighter blues, some green, some white, etc. with sea sponges. At this stage in this photo, the top has been sealed with satin polyurethane. It is still a bit to glossy for my liking, as the top picks up a bit of glare. I will be putting matte polyurethane on the top at the end of the week.

I'm thrilled with how the table turned out. It looks like a high end piece of furniture or island. The new doors are solid and quiet, and the tabletop makes me want to get started painting some ships! I probably have about 70 hours in the project, which required a tablesaw, power miter saw, drill press, air nailers, plus the odd hand tool here and there. A lot of work, but I am very glad I did the project.

We tried last year, but consecutive heavy snowfalls kept delaying the event. Then, I had to get cracking on our home renovation in order to finish off the kitchen and the final details. I finished all of that work, which took us into spring 2016, when my wife then had knee replacement surgery! So, after surgery and the rehab and physical therapy work to rebuild strength and range of motion, we are finally here in October 2016! Almost a year to the day since I was last able to host a game.

TobyCon is named in honor of our Jack Russell terrier, Toby. He's a ball of fire, and too smart for his own good. Toby runs herd on everyone when they visit, and I end up holding him through most games as he demands to be up where he can see what is going on. Jack Russells have an insatiable desire to be involved and in charge.....

The first TobyCon had an ancient theme, with a Roman/Seleucid and a Han/Three Kingdoms Chinese game. Both games used Pulse of Battle for the rules.

The Han/TKC game was first - a clash between two exotic and colorful armies. Thanks to Terry Shockey for providing the armies. Beautifully done, and armies I've never seen in use before. I'd be lying if I said I remembered the flow of the game, but I believe the Han won the game.
This was a wild game. The Romans pounded on the Seleucids for probably 90% of the game, and amassed a huge tally of Army Morale Points as the Seleucids hit 0. However, the Seleucid right wing finally advanced (opportunity, initiative, and the needed cards!), and started hacking the Roman left wing up in a fierce manner. Finally, both armies were at 0 AMPS! Fortunately for the Romans, the Seleucids drew an Army Morale card and failed the test, ending the game. I don't think I've ever seen a game like this - huge AMP loss swings, with the game ending with both sides at 0 AMPS!
I had great fun, and I'm looking forward to the next game - hopefully in early November. I'm presently working away on redoing my game table, to get the design aesthetic to more closely match the cabinet style we've used throughout the house (Shaker). So far so good - but more on that in upcoming posts.Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-22706596624803937262016-06-01T11:50:00.000-06:002016-06-01T11:50:10.941-06:00Quick UpdateWell, is an update of no game activities still an update?

Real world responsibilities have limited, or more correctly halted, my game and hobby activities for a while, and for probably the next couple of months.

My wife had a total knee replacement surgery 1 week ago, and the first 4 days or so of that "experience" are quite traumatic. We're smack dab in the middle of the rehab phase now, and she's doing really well. However, the rehab takes a lot of time, as doing all the things around the house that are needed to keep the household going.

So, I apologize for the lack of posts, but that is currently out of my hands!Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-326535461793613722016-04-24T20:38:00.001-06:002016-04-24T20:38:13.780-06:00No TobyCon 2016....AgainMy first try at TobyCon 2016 failed due to the elements (over 2' of snow on the weekend of the planned event).

TobyCon 2016 was rescheduled to yesterday.

Which didn't happen.

I should be clearer - yesterday did happen.

TobyCon didn't.

Somehow I caught what can only be described as some demonic spawned illness (flu??) that forced me to cancel the games yesterday. I'm only now "a bit" back on my feet to even type this.

Maybe the name "TobyCon" is cursed.Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-11835951534216281292016-04-19T19:14:00.001-06:002016-04-19T19:14:28.935-06:00TobyCon 2016TobyCon 2016, named after our Jack Russell Toby, was originally set for last Saturday. However, over 24" of snow fell last weekend......hence the new date for TobyCon2016 - THIS Saturday!
Broncos are SB50 Champs! Awesome performance by the #1 defense in the league.

I predicted a Broncos win 26-20. I was glad to be wrong.Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-7619618565139933002016-02-06T19:48:00.000-07:002016-02-06T19:48:22.979-07:00Super Bowl Eve - A PredictionMy official prediction for the Super Bowl tomorrow:

Broncos 26
Panthers 20

Peyton Manning has one more "good enough" game left in him, going 22 of 34 for 274 yards and 2 TDs, earning the Super Bowl MVP award and a ride into the sunset and retirement.

I think it is laughable how little credit is being given to the Broncos, and how few are picking them to win tomorrow. This is a team that played 7 games without its starting QB, played 5 or so games with its starting QB injured to the point it affected his play, and a team with a defense that lead the league in defensive performance and statistics from the very start of the season through to this point in the playoffs.

I believe the lack of respect is due to the lopsided media love affair with Cam Newton for the Panthers. While he's a great player, Super Bowl history is full of teams with good to great offenses built around a single player (QB) that gets throttled in the championship game.

I've seen a lot of Super Bowls from the Broncos perspective, and you get a feel for when a team is too tight, too busy telling everyone how the spotlight isn't going to bother them (see the Broncos vs. Seahawks, Broncos vs. Giants, Broncos vs. 49ers.....). The Panthers look to me to be too concerned with appearing loose. We'll see when the curtain goes up.

The Broncos played a much tougher schedule, compared to the Panthers (playing their own putrid division teams twice, and the AFC South teams - either the worst or second worst division in the league). A soft schedule and big wins don't temper a team for a Super Bowl. In the playoffs the Panthers first played the Seahawks, who were exhausted from an overtime, sub-zero temperature game the week before, and then the Cardinals, who looked like they were just looking for a place to fall down, bickering with each other on the sidelines. The Broncos? Beat the Steelers and the Patriots, both games tight and hard fought.

I stand by my prediction: 26-20 Broncos.

I'll be here to enjoy the victory, or take the abuse if I'm horribly wrong!Brenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13034997568862879687noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5046718381652470590.post-1127101964334180192016-01-24T18:03:00.001-07:002016-01-24T18:03:06.482-07:00SOOOOOOPA BOWL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Wow, what a defensive performance by the Broncos. Not much from the offense, but just enough. Two weeks to wait before playing.....who knows? Carolina or Arizona. I'd prefer Arizona because I think they're more beatable, but I suspect it will be Carolina.

I can't take watching too many more games like that.....
